Curly Girl Giveaway – We have a Winner!

Congratulations Mary! You answered all 5 questions correctly and were the 5th entry!  Here are the answers:

  1. From which sect of Caribbean people did dreadlocks originate?  Rastafari, a sect in Jamaica who venerate Haile Selassie, also known as Ras Tafari.  They practice vegetarianism.  A famous adherent, Bob Marley was a Reggae superstar.

  2. Who was the first renowned American actress to appear in cornrows? Three time Emmy Award recipient and Oscar nominee Cicely Tyson wore cornrows in 1973 and sported a TWA as early as the 1960′s.

  3. Which newswoman wore an Afro to interview Tricia Nixon? Melba Tolliver, the first black person ever to anchor a network news program, wore her hair in a natural ‘fro to cover the 1971 wedding of Tricia Nixon, angering her ABC-TV employers and endangering her job as a reporter.

  4. Which 19th century black American author, abolitionist and statesman wore his hair naturally? He wasn’t the first, but the best known.  Frederick Douglass was a celebrity of his time.

  5. Which Black Panther party member, law professor and ex-wife of Soul on Ice author was as well-known for her afro as Angela Davis? Kathleen Neal Cleaver joined the Black Panther Party and married Eldridge Cleaver in 1967. After living in exile she earned her law degree from Yale and worked for Cravath, Swaine & Moore in the late ’80s.

Amazing the lives they lived, huh?  We should all take risks like this. Thank you to those who took them before us.
